Frank Duryea was commisioned by his brother Charles, who was a manufacturer of bicycles, to design and build a motor vehicle. The result was the first successful gasoline motro car in the U.S.A. 1895 A second version of this car was entered in the first automotive race in the U.S.A., sponsored by the Chicago Times, and won the first prize. The business relationship between the brothers was terminated in 1895. 1896 The first American automobile series production of 13 cars was begun by the Duryea company in Springfield, Mass. Frank Duryea President. After building motor cars since April 1892, it became obvious that more capital was required to expand the business. 1901 J. Frank Duryea entered into a contract with the Steven Arms and Tool Company to build under his supervision, automobiles to be called Stevens-Duryea. The Stevens-Duryea Car was first shown in November 1901. Production models reached the market in March of 1902. 1902 Model H - 2 cylinder 5 HP. Total of 50 cars were built and sold during 1902. On October 15, a lot of 200 automobiles was underway. 1903 Model L - 2 cylinder 7 HP with 69 inch wheel base. The Model L was built 1903 through 1905. 1904 The contract with Stevens Arms and Tool Co. of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts was terminated and the Stevens-Duryea Company was formed. J. Frank Duryea was vice-president and chief engineer. 1905 Model R was available 1905 - 1906 - 1907 - 1908. The R is a 4 cylinder touring 20 HP with 90 inch wheel base. 300 cars were built in 1905. 1906 Model S, big 6 cylinder. 50 HP, 122 inch wheel base car. Was built 1906 - 1907 - 1908. Production for 1906 was 900 cars. 1907 Model U light Six - 35 HP 114 inch wheel base. Model U was built 1906 through 1909. 1913 Model C - 6 was available with choice of two wheel bases - 131 and 138 inches. Built 1913 and 1914 with starter and electric lights. |
